Auditions 101

The word audition is scary to a lot of people but I’m here to help you to understand why auditions don’t have to be scary.

1) The first thing people are afraid of is just not knowing what’s going to happen.

For our auditions, we start with a group activity with all the auditioners. We’ll play a game or two to break the ice, loosen everyone up and give the judges a chance to see how everyone interacts with one another.

After that, auditioners will take turns come meeting the judges, introducing themselves, ask questions and give a prepared monologue.

If we were doing a musical, you would perform a part of a song as well, followed by the group coming back together for a dance activity. However our production of Peter Pan this Summer will not be a musical.

Shows with larger casts will have what’s called callbacks on a future day where auditioners will be “called back” to read for certain roles with other people so judges can get to see who works well with one another and ultimately make the final decision for casting. But since our show is small this time around we will not be doing any callbacks.

2) The second thing people are afraid of is the judges themselves.

I get it, nobody likes being judged.

But here’s the thing, the judges are your friends. In most cases they were auditioning in front of judges for a show just like you so they know exactly how you feel.

The judges don’t want you to feel scared but for you to feel excited. They aren’t looking for your flaws but your strengths. They want to take in as much information about you so they can choose a role that you can be confident in and also challenged to grow.

And though they may ask a lot of questions but you can ask them questions too.

3) The last big thing auditioners can be afraid of is not getting a role, finding out that you failed or that you didn’t do as well as you hoped. Our shows are special in that everyone that auditions does get cast.

The only time you may not get cast is if you have too many scheduling conflicts when it comes to rehearsals and I mean you can’t really be in a show if you haven’t rehearsed for it right?

Otherwise, you are absolutely, no matter what, will be getting a part in our show if you audition.

You don’t have to be scared. And even if you are still a little nervous about auditioning that’s okay because you still have room for feeling excited too!

So whether it’s your first time or your 10th time, we’d love to have you join us for our Summer production of Peter Pan. Enroll today at jbthinkers.com/theater and we will see you at auditions on June 28th, 2025!
